First I noticed a large piece of broken plaster in the hall. Then I noticed this neat, round hole poked in the stairwell, about the size of a .22 slug. Which was, of course, my first thought, but there isn't a clear line of sight to this point and there wasn't a window broken or anything. And I'm damn sure I don't shoot up the place in my sleep.

In the back of the hole there's a bit of metal and it looks rusty. I reckon it's a nail. With all the sub-zero temperatures this Winter, the stresses must've done for the plaster and it just exploded outwards.

Unless you can think of a better explanation.
